Yep I'd let them dry out first. Whenever I siphon my tank that is how I do it. That way i can keep syphoning to my hearts content and not have worry about the amount of water I'm changing and the parameter swings that can go along with it. Keep plugging away and you will beat them.

I watched the a while ago but I can't remember which ones. Never had too much of an issue with the alkalinity or calcium test but it seems that magnesium results often vary by 200 ppm and I often get 1600. Ill have to rewatch them to see if I'm screwing something up. Wouldn't be the first time!

Are you using a Red Sea magazine test? I've found that my magazine readings are all over the place with that test kit.
