I think it's time to rehome this Falco Hawkfish. He's about 3" and taking to attacking one of my small Watanabe Angels, and I'm not interested in finding out if he's going to continue. He went through a month of quarantine, tank transfer, Prazi Pro, Metrodozonale and a formalin bath. He's been...
Definitely get a conch if you have a lot of sand, I have 1-2 inches, and that may not be enough for him/her, but he does a swell job of churning it when he's awake.
I haven't cleaned mine, but I doubt I will. I think the important take away with whatever method is to balance nutrients like...
I just set up a new system with existing live rock and added a lot more dry rock. I think you miss out on some of the cooler organisms starting from a completely sterile environment.
As for quarantine, I definitely am a believer in 1 month with the tank transfer method to rid yourself of ick...
Yup, 1-2 inches, deeper just collects more detritus for the long haul. I wish I had a little coarser sand, I reused the sand I got with the tank and it's a little fine for critters to burrow through.
The Jaubert style tanks of old, when I was first starting out tended to be high nutrient...
I'm planning on converting the generator over to Natural gas with a kit so I can run indefinitely assuming gas is flowing. The over head power lines are prone to damage around me.
We bought this house a week after Sandy's aftermath, they were out of power for a week, so I'm trying to at...
Can you use that gas for cars to keep it fresh in storage? I. E. Rotating it? I picked up 5 gallons but if it's not used it'll be next summer before I use it all. Just not sure if fuel stabilizer is ok for cars.

I'd love to have a frag tank connected, but they're physically 30 feet away from each other. For me the water would have to go down 5 feet, across 30 feet and back up 5 feet, just haven't figured a way how to keep the water levels even. Just wonder how you plan on connecting the two?
Picked up a generator a few weeks ago, tested it once and it ran fine. I'm hesitant to buy many gallons of gas just because it's such a pain to dispose of if I hold onto it for a long time. Paramus has a day for hazardous waste , but it's once a year, and I haven't found any regular place in...
I'm at 350 in Bergen County, Ridgewood water has deep wells, but nothing like water coming down from the mountains that NY gets. NYC water is exceptional, if you are off of that supply you're lucky, it's rare to have that low a TDS anywhere in the country, none-the-less a major city.
After, salt's cheap! Membranes and resin are expensive! I believe it also hurts your rejection rate over the long run, so what you spend in salt you'll be paying for extra water down the drain.
Sorry no studies that I'm aware of; but I would add my $.02. The acid part may be good for removing phosphate that is chemically bound, but realistically the rock that came from the ocean and was dried is most likely not going to have chemically bound phosphates. It had come from a near zero...
I have a space requirement of <50" long x < 13" wide x < 18" tall for a sump, and a 40 long fits exactly, but not sure if I should just start calling around stores to order one or see if they have one? I'm in North Jersey. It's only partially a WTB thread, just trying to figure out how one...
Thanks, I realized unfortunately that the skimmer that came with it is an sc-301, and it should have been an sx-302, so I may be in the market for a new skimmer shortly. But the sump has so many partitions that I can only fit in a 11x12x23" skimmer, which limits it to skimz sm201 or a compact...
Thanks, I put that rock up for grabs on the for free forum, though I'll probably kalk paste them tonight. I'm taking it slowly and just want to not take any big missteps if I can avoid it.
Diatoms and a little green algae just started on some of the rock that was cylcing in another tank (had...
I have a button Polyp rock with 4 tiny Green star polyp on them that I want out of the tank, free to a more advanced aquarist who's not afraid of them spreading.
I'm in Glen Rock, 07452. Thanks
