If you have red bugs, you will be able to see them, they are very visible crawling around the acro. Try a magnifying glass if you have one. Also I doubt red bugs would cause bleaching from the bottom, that sounds more like an ALK issue. Check your ALK and make sure your test kit is reading...

If you buy the cultivated clams from a store like wegmans they are very clean. You just have to remove the silt form the exterior, which I do what Nick recommended. I am actually making 100 of them today...

You can start running the carbon as this will remove anything that is in the water from the cycle and will polish your water. I would hold off on running GFO, as its just a waste for you to run it without having any corals in there. Once you add livestock I would start running the GFO.
