You'd be fine with two 1" bulk heads. I had a similar set up using a maxijet 900 and rubbermaid container with two offset holes and it worked fine.

I usually cut mine with a dremel tool and a diamond tapered bit. It's not a perfect circle but it's good enough to be used with bulk heads or uniseals.

If you want to give it a shot just for the heck of it, let me know. I'm sure I can dig up all of the parts you'd need. The only risk is that you have to ruin your impeller to modify it. Impellers are relatively cheap tough, so you could always buy a replacement if it doesn't work out.
