My lighting schedule is already only 6 hours, not sure if it would be good to go much less. Years ago I used to run them 10 hours a day, but reduced it and have found that 6 hours has worked well. I keeps them from heating the tank and grows the corals well.
LEDs look great, but I really love...
Tank is over 7 years old and the sandbed is only 1"-2" thick. I've sifted the sand and left it alone for months, sifting it seems to work best. The longer I leave it alone, the thicker it eventually gets. If I sift it, it comes back the next day or two. My CUC's don't seem to last or do...
Yeah, I forgot to mention, I have a blue backing attached to my tank, so when the coraline is removed you can see it. If it was just the clear glass, I don't think I'd like it better.
That sucks. Sorry to hear this. The only thing I forgot to do was remove a plug in my old kalk / top off bucket after mixing the kalk. So, when the pump turned on to fill the sump it kept on pumping since the water wasn't returning to the sump because the line was still plugged. I woke up in...
I go back and forth. Sometimes I think it looks nice on the back, other times I've scraped the back and have liked the look too. It just takes some work, so more times than not, I have it on the back.
Good luck with the new one. When I setup my 90, I was looking at the original stand and couldn't believe how small the wood was on the thing. I worked for years with fresh water. For my reef, I made a stand and used double 2x4's as legs and 2x6's across the top. I figured it could never be...
Yeah, your evaporation numbers don't sound off to me. I'm not sure what my 90 is doing, since I've got an ATO. When I had my 44, it was evaporating about 1 gallon a day. Some form of Auto Top Off is probably best.
My ATO is very simple. I just have a float valve in my sump tee'd off my...
I cycled my tank way back with a Striped and a Domino and they were some real nasty fish. Just like Jim said, you have to take out the established one and let the others establish a little. But then you may wind up with the same issue when you and the old one back, they might beat him up...
I always thought it was just the inital run. Maybe the breakin you're going through is just for tunning it. I'm not sure what you mean by darining back to the sump. Is there anyway to skim dryer? It sounds like you may be set to a wetter skim.
I used to use a brush, but it would scratch some of the items. I've switched to just soaking in vinegar. I pour some vinegar then some water in a container and soak the items for a while. If the junk wipes off, it's good. If not, I let it soak longer. Never tried muriatic acid.
I've been using a Mag-18 for my 90 with an Eshoppes dual 1" overflow and it has been very reliable. For the most part it is quiet, I can hear a little vibration from underneath in the basement. It's what works for me.
I hear there are more efficient pumps, but don't know what ones they are...
Glad to hear everything made it. I lost a bunch years ago, so I got some of the battery air pumps and connected them through a relay, so if the power goes out they come on. Now I've got piece of mind.
That's crazy. Everything is high. But, at least you know your problem. Maybe you could try a salt mix known for lower alk & cal levels. But, like the others said, get the saliity right first, then work on the others.
