Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
I control my kalk reactor stirring and my auto-topoff via my Aquacontroller. I had some annoyance from instances when the top-up unit would come on while the reactor was stirring or had just finished stirring, causing milky kalkwasser to be dosed and make the tank cloudy. I solved this (duh) by...
If you get up here to Rockaway, I have some mushrooms I'm trying to get rid of (turquoise with red spots) (they date back to club meeting #6) and I would be happy to cut you a hunk of my long-term (9 years) green nepthea.
Most sellers encourage you to add wayyy too many hermits. IMHO, you shouldn't have more than a handful, if any.
Most people who buy cleanup crew packages as recommended experience a lot of die-off.
I Am now dosing the following:
VSV, 2.5ml/day
Kalkwasser, huge amounts
Brightwell Products:
Potassion-P
Koral Kolor
Renew
Microbacter 7
Coral Amino (though this one is so pricey I'll probably stop once it runs out).
My corals, while not "bragging good," have never looked better.
Fun thing: I...
Dosing: all three, 2.5 mL total daily.
Approximate water volume: 250 gallons
Coral type: SPS
Cyano algae: Yeah, a fair amount
Hair algae: All faded and died after starting VSV
Chaeto/macro remote or in sump: N
Water changes: 25% per month
Other supplements: Brightwells --Potassium, Microbacter7...
Wow, that's cool. You could set up a reef anywhere the water depth and temp were right.
On the other hand, they could grow acro frags like any other crop!
Boomer, what's your take on iodine dosing? I used to, then I stopped for a long time, now I see people like Brightwell's promoting it again. What do you think, I still have a lifetime supply of lugols!
My experience is that the vodka made all th algae disapper, ever bit of it, but that cyano has really increased. I think the "bacteria" in "cyanobacteria" can use the crbon sources directly.
Still worth it, for me.
Make sure you have a large container hooked up to your skimmer, VSV dosing...
Jeez Bill, it never rains but it pours (literally, in your case.). I sometimes look at my setup and it seems like an office building held together with rubber bands, just an accident waiting to happen all the dang time. It's why I don't have any holes much below the waterline and not much...
FWIW,as a kalk reactor user, I found the "commercial" kalk powder worked better than pickling lime, it was finer and it mixes better. Currently suffering through a pound of "Kalkwasser Plus," which adds magnesium but lacks the OOMPH of real kalk!
I usually thaw it out and add it slowly, especially if it is the "bar" type like PE Mysis. I have a feeding ring (1" long 1.5" PVC pipe with 2 styrofoam floats attached) I made for dry foods, sometimes if I'm in a hurry I just drop a cube in there.
I have been dosing VSV and, for the most part, I like the results. I have experienced a huge increase in cyano, which I thought was caused by the vinegar (I used to have a tank which got vinegar + kalkwasser, and it had a real bad cyano problem.) Did you say some people do only vodka and have...
Auctions are crazy, it's like a madness takes over you. I have been guilty of succumbing to this. The worst is, for antiques, some people come in without going to the inspection and bid stuff way too high, stuff that you can't tell from back in the audience has been slathered with cheap paint...
FWIW, I keep all my MP3s separate and not under itunes control. Also, Apple recently offered to convert a lot of the purchased itunes to DRM-free versions, which I did, for a nominal fee. I don't know if that means the itunes formatted sonigs (AIFF?) were replaced with MP3s.
