Dan's 150 Rebuild

Officially ordered the new tank today. 72x18x28. Marineland 150RR corner overflows and black silicone :) should be here next week sometime

So now that my new tank is going to have 2 corner overflows, how do you think my plumbing should go? Never had a tank with corner overflows. Obviously have the right side dump right down into the first chamber but what about the left side? and how can I tie in my manifold I have made up already?

Connect both the drains into one pipe that drains into the first chamber. Manifold idk, never had one. Hopefully john can chime in on that

Dan how many returns on the free tank do you have. I though you had 2. As far as the overflows go I would dump one straight to the skimmer section. Take the other and have either all of it go to the fuge or split it and have some go to the fuge and rest to skimmer.

Go with a herbie setup and tie both drains together with a gate valve towards the end and the outlet just below the water level in the skimmer section.

On the new tank I'll have 2 returns. One in each corner overflow. I kinda like kyles idea of tying them together and having them dump into the first chamber. What's the Herbie method? Always see it but never know what it is. I want these overflows to be quiet as hell lol

If you want "quiet as hell" then search then take a look at RC. There is a fairly loooonnnnnggggg thread on it. Basically you take the overflows and returns and make them all drains with gate valves. I believe one or two if them act as a back up just in case.

You will have two holes in each overflow, correct? If so here is how you would set it up. You would plumb one drain/siphon line to each overflow and they would be tee'd together with a gate valve near to end of line with the discharge just below the water level in your sump. The standpipes for each of the siphons will be an few inches shorter than the water elevation that you want to run in your overflow. These siphon lines will handle all of the flow to your sump.

This will leave you with one hole in each overflow. In one of these you will have an emergency drain. The standpipe is a few inches higher than the siphons. It only kicks in if the siphons aren't keeping up for some reason. The last hole can be used for your return line or if you want to bring your return over the rim it can be used as another emergency drain.

The main advantage as John mentioned is that it is silent. A typical drain pipe sucks down water and air which can make it noisy. With a herbie setup you adjust the gate valve so that it doesn't pull air. It is basically creating a siphon which also allows the lines to handle more flow. The only time it makes any noise is when the emergency drain kicks in alerting you to inspect it. I ran this on my 120 and it worked great. My current tank uses a variation called the bean animal.

Oh wow thanks for explaining that Mike, makes more sense now. I'll have to check out a few pics just to be clear but I think I got the concept :) guess I'll be going this route.

Just got my 2nd WP40 in the mail today. I think I found a sweet spot where its not blowing too crazy. Not sure why I even care really, just gonna be tearing it back down in 2 weeks lol

I did a water change yesterday and afterwards noticed the water was a bit colder than the tank, not a huge concern as its always like that, but after the temp had risen again, I noticed the next morning it was down at 75° again. Think my heater is on its way out? I usually keep it at 78°

Yeah my heater is dead, temp is down to 72° degrees this morning. Thru a back up heater in there til I can go out and get a new one.
