Zippys tank

Thanks guys, as John knows I am still figuring out a few issues. Hope to get upgrade permission for another tank downstairs....correct some of my build issues.

Well, what goes up must come down. I am now the most receipt member of the afew club for my DT. I have started and will continue to dip. I will have to pull 2 of the larger rocks out and drummer saw off the well encrusted red planet....sigh. I want to know is this a problem for acros only, do I need to deal with all my sps. The odd thing is of the ones I could get off to dip at midnight last night not all seem affected even if they are right next to each other to the point of touching. One example is the huge blue slimmer I have, is this due to the amount of mucous it produces? Not that it changes anything but was wondering.
It would be nice to take the rock out dip it rinse it but I would probably kill inhabitants and create an ammonia spike when put back. As I told Jgraz I am setting up a 40 breeder to place the pieces in once removed from the rock and store there between dipping. Of the worms found the numbers are not huge but multiple colonies have at least one. I guess my qt practice is flawed and worthy of a hand smack! If I had not had my led pen light post lights out I never would have noticed. The corals all have full PE and look fantastic.
One positive is my wife seeing my dismay may be swayed to an upgrade in our den. I just need to plan how and when to bring it up. This weekend should be fun! On the bright side i get to rescape my tank and my alk correction to 7ish had brought out some amazing colors.

good luck with the battle Pete. had to fight aefw myself several months back and the best approach is definitely keeping them in a holding tank during the dips. the war can be won!

So I have battled montipora eating nudis and afew. Right now I have not seen any nudis for 10 days!! As for the afew, I will have always the posability in my DT. The frag/ dip tank has been cleared. So in celebration of my 120 upgrade I got an order from dr Mac today. All small under 15 dollar frags, not cause I'm cheap but I like to grow stuff out, and when put in a system is less likley to mess with your alk and Ca like a decent colony would. I got some acro crabs with this order to put in my DT. I hand place each in one of my non movable colonies. Thought are to help keep them clean, time will tell.

So I got this mushroom with my order, post discount it was 20 something. Yes, it is not a jawbreaker, but the color does make me smile!! In one you can see a hint of green and the frag has 2 babies. Nice score on my part.image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Jawbreaker or not that's a pretty nice shroom there. Glad to hear things are going well and love the fact that you are moving with the 120. Good luck with the build and make sure to keep us updated.

glad to hear that you'll be getting that 120! love the dimension on those tanks and im glad you've won the war, now just be very diligent with dips with new incoming corals!

let me know when you'll be able to frag a piece of that shroom! I had one but lost it during my chiller incident this past summer.

No problem, building a stand and canopy as we speak.

Thanks all, my wife have me permission to set a 120 up in our den. However I had to first have the floors sanded, stained darker and the wall painted. I knew there was a catch! So here we go;

image.jpg this is the wall the tank will go, the floor had just been stained. image.jpg this is post finish, the door in the first goes to a bathroom where I have my treatment tank dealing with afew and montipora nudis, I kept its window open and the door shut so as to keep fumes out. Well for some reason the crew left the door open after applying the finish and by the time I could remedy it my corals took a hit. You know when your montipora digitata rtns the fumes must have been bad! Was able to save a fair amount and the brown colors are fading as the real colors are returning 5 weeks later with weekly 15% water changes.

My choosing a 120 is because I love the footprint. It's just big enough to have real 3-d scaping but not too big it becomes a hassle. My current tank is a 55, not sure what I was thinking but onwards. My sump will mirror what I have, with my nutrient export being macro algae. Never had a need for Gfo as my phos are always 0.04 and I can't see a nitrate reading. So why change something that works. My reef tank currently resembles an English garden style, by this I mean it is eclectic and busy with a lot if interest. I'm not a minimalist and will continue my style in the 120, utilizing the back wall by gluing macro rock with a flat side to it. This way I can have a 3-d surface with which to grow corals. I will try to get a shot or my return in my 55 tonight, you will understand when you see it. Bottom will be bare except for a black plastic marine board silicones to the bottom. I like the few chalice and favias I have. This way they can spread out and not sink in the sand bed.

Here's my work from today stand and frame for canopy. My stand will have a 3 inch breve ridge ledge in the front and the back is for the mps dry side. It may be over kill on the stand but we are talking about quite a bit of weight. I'll have to show you later, can't find the pic I took.

Cheers,
Pete

Pete before you glue the rock to the wall and risk a fall I suggest you take a look at The Alternative Reef. They have a nice selection of handmade ceramic set up with proper magnets. They have shelves, frag stations, and even "power stations" which are made to surround vortechs. I have a medium frag station that I replaced my frag rack with. I added right after the Elos meeting and looks like it belongs with the rest of the rock. IMO these would be a great addition for someone who likes to put stuff everywhere.

Guess I should ask for a commission. LOL

Pete, I love that room with the glass wall (and the paint and floor look good too!) The code nazis in our town require a knee wall (I think 18 inches), so you'd never see that here in town. That is going to be a great room for the tank. Just keep it far enough from all that natural sunlight, and you'll be great.

Thanks Paul, that side faces north so no sun will hit the tank. The opposite wall is exactly the same. Our house is in the woods and I like to feel like I'm outside aesthetically not physically. Funny story with those windows. They are Anderson 400 series with low e glazing. I got 9 of these from my old bosses dad who had em custom ordered and his wife changed her mind. Gave me a steal of 9 of these for 10 cents on the dollar.

Thanks John, I will look into it. May be a bit more costly for what I have in mind though.
