Scrap the sand. Keep a cup or two to seed the new sand. The old sand will be loaded with nasty waste, sulfur, detritus, etc.

They look like clove polyps that are not fully developed. Have you ever had some type of clove polyp in you tank??

A picture would help greatly, but it may also be Diatoms, which can be caused from excess silicates in your water. Silicates will not show up in a TDS reading.

Looks like some type of sponge. Its harmless and beneficial, but it may choke out those cloves eventually.

The fans on mine did not come on until I really turned up the intensity of the lights and the fixtures warmed up. Try turning the light on a higher intensity and let it run for a while. If the fan still doesnt come on, there is something wrong...

Looking great Steve, you know my thoughts on the BK, and you have seen it in person. As for pumps I would have two separate pumps, I think you will run into issues trying to run them all off of one.

Agreed and I would avoid buying no-name bulbs off of Ebay to save a few bucks...
