I thought I read people had good experiences with them. I was considering them in the future, but maybe I'll have to re-think it.
Unfortunately, sickness can be subject to an argument, maybe the fish was fine and got infected in your tank or maybe the fish they sold was sick. But, in any...
Typical Ocellaris Clown pair, I had them for 10+ years. They started really bothering my large Dersea Clam when they decided to host in it, so they were removed. Female is in the front. Just ask that they stay together. $10

He may just be using them to build his shelter. I had a pinkspot goby that used do the same thing, but I couldn't tell if he was eating them either. You could try dropping in some empty shells to see if he grabs them too. If so, he's probably just using them for his shelter.
I don't have a snake, but do have a basilisk lizard. She requires higher temps around 80-90 in basking areas. When the temps are too low, she doesn't really eat much. This is usually in the winter. She also won't touch frozen mice, pinkies, etc. Her food must be moving to draw her...

I've used Mag's (18 & 9.5) and both were pretty quite. Depending on how the sat, you could sometimes hear some vibration, but I think any submersible would do that.
You don't have to have a canopy to hang them, plus they don't give any sort of disco look. They are a full power LED, but can be dimmed to whatever level you'd like, so not to overpower your corals. They come with a heat sink & fans and run very cool. The fixture only seems to get about 2...
