Dan's 150 Rebuild

Might be picking up a nice trio of lyretail anthias today(2 female and 1 male), my LFS has a very awesome trio in stock, 2 of which have been there for at least a week(m&f), gonna stop in later on and check em out. Anything to look out for?

Just make sure there swimming and not laying on the bottom of the tank... lmao
Just kidding buddy make sure they eat that's a must and watch them for a while see if they get along look for spots fat and healthy always a good sign
Good luck

I can always count on u for good advice haha jk. Thanks man, I asked if they'd do a "trio price" and they said they would, plus I think I have a $30 off coupon so I might be hitting the jackpot with these guys lol

Not to be a downer but from what I've read anthias need to eat like 3 times a day? I know you work long hours so just make sure you can get em fed enough

Yeah I've read that as well. I'll make it a point to get em fed, I'll get my gf to step up and feed em for once lol

Got it up and running :) 1st off, 1000ml from BRS for $45 is such a small amount! Wow. How often do the pellets have to be swapped out?

anyone know how to keep the pellets from sticking to the top?

Dan's New 150RR

Stop the reactor bang the top a little so they all fall down.

Wait 24 hrs for them to saturate and when you start up they should stay down.

Never swapped out. You just have to continue adding more as the bacteria eat up the pellets. As far as cost, if you purchase the 1 gallon container from BRS (normally $160), during a group buy, you can pick them up for $128.

Oh so they breakdown over time? I may get the gallon bucket eventually depending on how quickly they need to be added. Are the aquamaxx bio pellets any good?

The bacteria eat the pellets....it's food. They grow and divide, and in the process utilize nitrates and phosphates (at approximately 16:1). The tumbling causes for some to be swept away and removed from your tank in your skimmer. And they eat more, grow, divide and get swept away repeatedly. That's it....pretty simple.

The only pellets I've used are BRS. Don't know anything about Aquamaxx. Some will tell you other pellets are better, but I look at it as simply being food for bacteria. Last I looked, they don't have a discriminating palate, and will eat about anything organic. So I'm happy with my BRS pellets.

Gotcha! Easy enough. Was definitely the easiest thing to set up ever! Lol well I started with 1 cup and in 2 weeks I'll add more. Is there a reason for starting off with a lower amount? I estimated my system to be around 170g so that would be roughly 3 1/2ish cups?

I can only guess that the reason for the 1/3 add per week is to allow time to seed the pellets and / or to assure you don't rapidily strip the nitrates/phosphates too quickly.

Do you guys still run gfo wth the pellets? I was at Tommys yesterday and hes having great results with just pellets.

I wish I knew this, I just bought a brs daul reactor for carbon and gfo...

Right now I'm still running GFO. Gotta let my pellets break in first. And then monitor my phos and nitrates

Dan just curious but do you currently have nitrates in the system? Remember that the Bio-pellets won't actually decrease anything if you don't have nitrates. Phosphate reduction is dependent on nitrates and vise versa. This is often why it is recommended that bio-pellets be implemented to a mature system. One of the reasons I stopped the Biopellets is because I couldn't reduce my phosphate any lower then .06 without GFO because my system ran very low nitrate.

Yeah, I do have nitrates, not much but they're there. I think they were at 20ppm last time I tested but that was before the steady water changes. Plus, with the stock I'll be adding, I'm sure it won't take long before nitrates really start showing up.

I'm starting to get an algae bloom on my sand again, guess I'm going thru "new tank syndrome" again Lol
