Dan's 150 Rebuild

Okay, biopellet users. How long does it take for the reactor to break in? I've heard the reason my tank is cloudy is bc of the reactor. Is that true? I have a total of 1 cup of pellets in there right now. I think I'm supposed to have a total of 3-3.5 cups for my system

Anyone?

Okay so I know this picture is no where near "to scale" but how's it look for redoing the plumbing?

the reason I have the manifold off to the right is because there's a crossbeam under the tank in the center for support. Let me know what u guys think!!

Two things I notice.

You need valves on the two return lines. You will need those to dial them back to be able to get flow through the other ports.

Second, and it's kind of in conjunction with the first. Without valves you will still have higher flow going through one side the the other. My guess is the right side.

You also want the exit port of the biopellet reactor at the pick-up of your skimmer.
Oh really? See that I did not know, how come?
Yep. Without them that will be the waters least resistance. You will get next to no flow out of the other valves.
Well that's how it is now. But I figured the reason behind that was bc i had the manifold on the right side and water didn't have to go thru the manifold on the left side.

If I put GFO on one side of the manifold and BP on the other would that make a difference?

The way biopellets work is that it is bacterial food. The bacteria grow and sluff off the pellets after "consuming" nitrates and phosphates. The skimmer immediately removes them from the water column. If you don't have the exit of the reactor right next to your skimmer, all this bacteria ends up in your water column....most likely making for cloudy water.

Oh wow. Thank you for explaining that to me I had no idea man :/

I'm not sure I understand. Either way each "feed" off the manifold should have some type of flow control. As long as it does you have control how much water moves through it. One return could be 6" away and another 4ft as kind as you have a valve you can turn down the one that 6" away allowing more water to flow to the other. Valves are your friend, just remember each ones adds to the headloss.

Pump feed from the right.
Then I have three 1/2" valves for reactors and such. Then two 3/4" valves. One for frag tank and one for refugium. Then the left is only to allow air to escape after the the main pump is shut off and on over time.

Even while consuming food. As long as the return of the bio pellet reactor is in the same chamber as the skimmer it will be sucked up and processed. I stopped jamming my bio pellet output into my skimmer intake. Other than water changes what might work great for you is a particulate clarifier. Kent marine pro clear used twice a week at lights out works great for clearing a tank. I use just a combination of carbon/purigen/phosban/gfo to keep my water pristine. I have no ill effects running more than 1 media in addition to my bio pellets.

Well I'm running carbon right now. My GFO is turned off at the moment bc someone said to turn it off while my BP reactor was breaking in. Should I turn it back on?

Well how longs it been? Are you adding any bacterial boosters or catalysts to get the bps going? When they start producing slime your basically set another indication is rapidly lowering some nuisance algae /trates
