You don't want to run GFO until you find out if you'll need it. And you'll only need it if you have some nasty phosphate problem for something like leaching rock. For biopellets to work, you need both nitrates and phoshates. If one or the other is missing, pellets won't work. I would suggest you test for nitrates and phosphates to see where you are at.

+1. It sounds like you're adding equipment to your system just to have it. Let the tank mature and stop messing with it so much man.

I have been testing for them. Every other day. My phosphates keep fluttering between 0.00-0.03ppm and my nitrates are at 5ppm constantly.

No I'm not. I'm adding it bc I'm eventually going to need it. I plan on having a heavy stock in this tank so why not try and nip it before it gets too bad?

I definitely would not run GFO. Your tank is not producing exess phosphates and therefore the biopellets will work best just running them on their own.

Unless you put rock in that is producing excess phosphates or your water source changes, now having excess phosphates, you will not need that GFO reactor. The nitrate/phosphate ratio of poop, food, death, etc, is the same ratio need for the bacteria in the biopellet reactor. So you're good with just the biopellets. You might wish to use that reactor for carbon, if you're not already running that.

Yeah that's a good idea bc I've been running carbon for a long time but always in a filter sock, never in a reactor. Is there a big difference?

There is a carbon calculator on BRS site. Put in you water volume and type of carbon and it will tell you how much to use.

They are nice. Not as nice as some others. Have you considered a sailfin or mimic or chocolate or any of the other awesome tangs sunny has in his tank of dreams ?
