Here's my Big Office System

Re: Here's my 120

Hehe :)

I'd love to keep a tusk! But several of my fish are habitual visitors to the cleaner shrimp. So if it doesn't survive the Interceptor I'll be getting another.

I went to Lowe's got a new 20" fan and finally installed a booster fan at the end of my duct work run, I've had the dam fan for months. Fish room is breathing nicely again.

Re: Here's my 120

Well, I just went ahead and dosed the tank with the Interceptor, seems to have worked like a charm on the RBs. And the shrimp? He seems to be OK. It was definitely a bit groggy at first but has bounced back since I added a ton of carbon to the fuge.

But my clams, I think what ever pathogen slowly took my maxima for so long has inflicted both of my clams. I am really concerned. They're not pinching or a gapping, slowly withering. Any treatment suggestions?

Have you tried freshwater dips?

fresh water dips?

my guess is, it need better quality water to over come the drug-shock... if dip in fresh water, what's the gain? it may make it more stress??
???

Re: Here's my 120

What happens if you put them in your frag system instead of the dispay? I've found fish to annoy my clam enough to where it doesn't really open. Unforunately never that I've seen actually doing it, but over time you see the degredation. Moving it to the frag system solves half the problem. Now I have a really pretty clam where I can't see it. If I knew which fish was annoying it, I would have pulled it by now!

Re: Here's my 120

Well, the clams troubles began before the Interceptor treatment. But I think all your suggestions are on point in that something is causing the clams to stress, and I believe this is attracting nipping from a particular fish. I am about convinced that the affliction which took my maxima which struggled from day one in my system, so it came with the ailment, is troubling my squammy & now my deresa. I think my stripped rabbit, being the lug head he is, is sensing a distressed animal and tasting (nipping)the clams.

I moved the squammy to the fuge a couple of weeks ago in an effort to give it a break while I did a little research. IN the interim, the deresa began to struggle. I decided to do a 30 minute FW dip on both clams, adding a few drops of Lugol's for the last 10 minutes. Both clams are now in the fuge under 175 MH in shallow water. And both seem to be responding well.

Here's a poor picture. You can see the white edge around the deresa's inlet, I now believe this was tasted, there are kiss (bite) marks on the mantle as well.

I am making some changes to the fish room now, premature of my long term plans (installing the 1/2 hp chiller and the MRC 4R skimmer) but I need to get a full fledged frag system ( a 90 g tank) up so I can move the clams there for long term recovery. The rabbit will go to the fuge to chew on excess algae for a while. Then I'll rotate the clams back to the display, assuming a full recovery, and the rabbit to the frag tank for algae maintenance there.

Wheh! This will be a lot of work! But, my clams are worth it to me , and I need the frag room. My frag rack is way over crowded!

Bax mentioned that one of the clams appeared to have come with a parasite. Freshwater dip is the preferred method of most when parasites are suspected. Sounds like it might be working.

Re: Here's my 120

The deresa I've had since it was bearly 3" that's over four years now.

The Squammy a got at about 4" from another reefer during a tear down, just over two years ago.

The clam that came in and just withered, that I belive brought the trouble with it, was a small tear drop maxima that I had thought recovered but then withered and died suddenly. I had that clam about two years. But it would only look good for while then struggle and so on, it would even have growth spurts when it was doing well!

This is a perfect example as to why we should QT everything, including inverts, it's just hard to do without the right set up... I am working on it. ::)

Re: Here's my 120

My clams are seemingly doing better in the quite of the fuge so I'll leave them there a while longer and hope for the best.

On Friday, I walked into my office and noticed the established orchid dottyback, who has developed to a male, was doing his dance to entice the little new comer into his cubby. This has been going on sice the addition of the new fish, so I pay little attention ... normally.

This time I notice that the little new commer seams swollen and ripe with egg row! Hmmm I thought, we may have something here. By the time I grabbed my camera, the dance was over and the male was in the cubby.

Here's the male poking out of one of the many enterances to his pad.

But, here's the little female taking the plunge!

Ahhhh! Summer love! ;)

Re: Here's my 120

Not at this time Phyl, maybe one day.

For now just like my o.clowns, whatever hatches will just be food for the tank. I do have a copy of Martin Moe's book on rearing ODs and I may get a 20g tank and give it a shot one day. The first thing I would need to overcome is how to collect the fry not an easy task in my tank, retrieving anything from the bottom generates copious numbers of incidental frags.

I have been giving some thought to setting up a second fuge that would have a DSB of some sort, with only grassess in it. Given that the o. clowns are spawning every 4-6 weeks and the ODs could also maintain that pace if they are so inclined, who knows what might develop in such a fuge.

Right now I am still struggling to finsd an oportunity to connect my new chiller and MRC skimmer so the fuge thing isn't happening too soon! ::)

Re: Here's my 120

Welp, I have been soooo busy at work that setting up the chiller and skimmer have been impossible. When ever I make a skimmer adjustment, much less a change, I like to be there to watch and adjust.

That just isn't happening right now. Thank goodness, we've ben really busy lately!

So now in two weeks, I am on vacation. My sitter has asked me NOT to add any new stuff on his watch. So, I'll wait till I get back.

The ODs are very friendly, it is very interasting to watch thier interction now that they have spawned.

.... It's like college, they realy aren't boyfriend and girlfriend, just buds with benefits :-*

Re: Here's my 120

Leaving for the beach early Saturday. Wish my tank sitter luck!

I'll be making some of the planned changes ASAP after I return.

Re: Here's my 120

So, in prep for my vacation, I did the requsite maint. stuff and started blow bubbles. I think it'scool to see your flow pattern ever so often. Here's a vid:

And a pre vaca FTS:

Re: Here's my 120

Hey just got back from vacation, thanks for the compliment! I hope your new venture in saltwater works well for you. Best advice is to read, read, read and read some more.

Good luck!

Re: Here's my 120

welcome back - how's the tank? corals/fish all fine I presume? Curious if you had a fish-sitter or just left it alone.

Re: Here's my 120

Hey phil

I had a fish sitter, a rookie, he did a great job. Followed every instruction and did not embellish anything. I litterally wrote out tags and hung them all over the system with a master list of things to do, and provided pre-measured morning and evening feedings, and one pre-set up nori clip for a mid week snack.

Poor sitter (my nephew) handled my reef and his father's pond I helped designed and install just last fall.

He was a nervous wreck! ;D

Re: Here's my 120

I haven't posted any fish pics in a while and this is a fish tank ... sooooo ...
