I have had brittle stars regenerate in a tank. If the star has a crack in its leg, it is possible (but by no means certain) that the parameters in your tank could be more stable, and the animal will need the most stable conditions possible to regenerate.

We have it under t5 lighting currently. It has also done fine under led lighting and metal halide. We have it in a 45g cube; it was previously in a 30g cube.

And by that he means if your wife forgets to monitor things like evaporation. I think reusing water from the dt in the qt is a good idea. The only thing I would say relates to evaporation- you will still need to monitor evaporation in the small qt. Good luck!
